ca. 1934, model A-16, B-16, D-16, RM-16,
RT-16, PR-16 or 16-34?
I'm not real sure of the model
number as Midwest was notoriously vague on identifying their radios.
This a 16 - tube (uses 4 - #45's in the output stage), 5 band (broadcast + 4 short wave bands to 32 MHz) am
radio receiver less speaker. The speaker was mounted in a separate
"Sound \Cabinet" and I understand very scarce.
The Midwest radio company started in the early 1920's
by A.G. Hoffman and sold battery radios under the "MIRACO" brand.
In the mid 1930's the "Midwest" brand appeared offering (supposedly)
high quality radios at considerable less cost than the leading brands
such as RCA, Philco & Zenith. They had great deco styling and eye
appeal but their quality and advertising left a lot to be desired.
They are highly prized by collectors today because of their
beautifully styled cabinets plus most model are somewhat scarce.
The piece I'm offering is the radio part of a two -
piece set (radio & speaker). The speaker was called a "Soundcabinet"
and was made for the radio to set on top. The radio had been slightly
modified so it will function with an 8 ohm PM speaker. The original
speaker required the electrodynamic type. The minor modification I
mentioned was simple, a choke of the proper size was installed to
replace the field coil of the original speaker and is mounted under
the chassis. Plus a small
terminal block
was also mounted on the chassis right rear for easy connection for an
external PM speaker. Both these items can easily be removed if one can
find an original speaker. The original
speaker socket
is still in place.
This set is offered as-is as I have not restored the
electronics. It does work, but poorly, someone before me has long ago
replaced some of the capacitors with ones that has since failed, so it
needs a general electronic restoration for proper performance. The
cabinet has been beautifully refinished with hand rubbed lacquer. The
chassis is quite clean, no rodents, or bugs have lived here. The only
flaws worth mentioning are: 1), I don't believe the knobs are original
and: 2), one corner (extreme right end of travel) of the
dial scale has
a small piece of the
corner missing.
This is only noticeable if the dial is tuned beyond the normal tuning
range.
