The Emerson line of radios using the subminiature tubes were introduced in 1953 with the model 747. The 747 had the full compliment of 4 tubes utilizing the standard all American five Superhetrodyne circuitry with a built-in loop-stick antenna. The construction quality of these little sets is excellent and they perform quite well. The 838 "Transistorized" version was next in this line-up and was the same circuitry as the 747 except the output tubes were eliminated and replaced with a push-pull compliment of two transistors. The model 856 is exactly the same except for the front panel cosmetics. Battery requirement: Model 747, 1-45 volt "B" battery, 1-1.5 volt "A" battery, the 838 & 856 require a special 4 volt "A" battery plus the 45 volt "B" battery. These sets measure 6X3.5X1.5" and weigh (without batteries) just under 1 1/4 lb.
