Sometimes referred to as the "Children's Radio/phono", this neat
little set is from the 1946-47 era. The case is made up of 8
separate plastic castings. The two piece lid incorporates the
built-in loop antenna sandwiched between the top and an inside
insert which is held in place by what appears to be rivets (and
probably glue too). The ivory sections are made of two types of
plastic, the top is a soft material while the grill and other
smaller pieces are made of Urea or Plaskon (a hard plastic).
The phono is a single speed (78 RPM) driven by a direct
drive motor with a pinion drive gear box. The pick-up is the old
standard style crystal type cartridge.
The radio circuit has a couple of unusual design oddities. One, it
incorporates a selenium stack for the rectifier (it has been replaced
with a silicon diode). Two, it uses a pair of 50B5's in parallel
for the output stage with the heaters in series. That makes the
heater string about 16 volts shy for the tube's rated heater
voltages. It does not seem to mind though as it works
exceptionally well. Otherwise it's the typical AA5 circuitry.
