Silvertone (Sears) model 1390
"Grandmother" Clock Radio circa 1931

From my collection.

"Grandfather" & "Grandmother" clock radios were produced by nearly every major radio company (and a few not so major) in the years 1931-32 only. Some of them were very special and unique while most were simply a chassis that was used in one of the companies other models and installed in a tall cabinet with a clock. The clock in this particular set is a "Hammond", the Radio a "Silvertone" model 1390 which is a six tube Super-Heterodyne made by the "Colonial radio company. Colonial was a huge radio manufacturer in the early days and produced very high quality sets. Radios with the "Colonial" brand are rather scarce considering the number of sets they manufactured. The reason for the scarcity of the "Colonial" brand is the bulk of their production went to Sears under the "Silvertone" brand.

This is called a "Grandmother" clock radio. The difference between the "Grandmother" and "Grandfather" clock radios is the height. The "Grandfather" clock radios are approximately 1' taller than the smaller counterpart, generally around 6' or taller, this one is 5' 3" counting the decorative trim at the top.

This is a set I have owned for many years and recently finished the restoration. The restoration on the cabinet included cleaning and "deluxing" the original finish rather than refinishing it. Most of the restoration time was spent restoring the chassis which was coated with a heavy coat of sticky cigarette tars and other contaminants. All cans, tuning condenser and most parts were removed for cleaning.
