The "Clipper", the first
"transoceanic", model 7G605 was introduced in Jan 1942. It was
dubbed the "Zenith Trans-Oceanic Clipper" as it had a sailboat
outline stitched into the speaker grille. After December 1942,
during the second production run, the "Bomber" grille work was
introduced and used until production
ended in April 1942
Originally sold for $75.00 and
some 35,000 were made. The serial number of this one is T853166,
the last serial number was T890260.
(The above info was gleaned from J.
Bryant's & H. Cones's fine book; "The Zenith Trans-Oceanic".)
Now about this one; by far the
finest example of this model that I have seen. All original except
for the authentic reproduction knobs and the parts I used in the
electronic restoration that I
performed. The case and finish is near perfect, chassis and
insides exceptionally clean, even the original handle (which is
usually badly deteriorated) is near perfect. This set has
obviously had very good care. All the original tubular capacitors,
an electrolytic can, AC cord and a couple of tubes have been
replaced with new ones. The set can now be used for reliable and
safe operation. I have carefully performed an RF/IF alignment and
it works perfectly on all bands. Has the original antenna rod with
no damage, bends or kinks, the removable BC & shortwave antennas
are also like new.
