Magnavox Radio Speaker
model R2-B horn speaker, circa 1921

The Magnavox Company

The Magnavox company is responsible for the sounds we hear today from our auto radio to our TV set and every other audio device we listen to today. Magnavox invented and patented the Voice Coil that is used in all conventional audio speakers. They did this around 1917! Their speakers made in the early days of radio (when all other speakers were nothing more than an earphone mounted on the base of a horn) actually had a voice coil driven diaphragm attached to the base of a horn. This gave their speakers much more power and superior sound quality.

The horn speaker pictured here is one of their best and next to their largest. It measures 18" in diameter at the bell.
