RARE FIND!!
Western Electric Speaker model 540-AW
Like New in it's original shipping crate

This beautiful well preserved speaker was apparently never removed from it's container. When I acquired, it was still tied down and mounted  with it's *original cord and wood mounting plank. Judging from the way the string cord was tied and the years of accumulated dust, I don't think it was ever untied, just used by the original owner left in it's box.

I removed it from it's container, to inspected, test and photograph. It's flawless sans some minor deterioration the rear cloth screen. It works and sounds great. The cord is excellent as well as the finish and W-E decal. I've had a number of these over the years (I still have one in my collection) and they are (in my opinion) the very best sounding of all the early cone type speakers.

I quite sure it did not come with the paper Parrot decals. I've been informed by a vintage cone speaker expert that they are likely an aftermarket mail order  item from the same period as the speaker. Folks could order such items from a magazine ad to add some color to their speaker or whatever else they might want to decorate. I'm fairly sure (with the right technique) the parrots could be removed if one so desired. I think it looks great just as the original owner applied and would leave as-is if I were keeping it.

*unfortunately, I have lost or misplaced the original cord if found at a later time, I will send it to the purchaser (if wanted). It was just thick cloth cord (string).

Unknown  manufacturer (Lektophone?)
vintage radio speaker

This was basically just a frame when I found it. I have engineered a driver unit from an unknown manufacturer and fitted it nicely to the frame. I fashioned a cone from a replacement I had acquired long ago which worked  out just right. After a little more engineering work, the driver was connected to the cone, a few adjustments and it now sounds as good as any speaker from this period.  An excellent performing and attractive speaker for any of the early battery or AC radios of the 1920's requiring a two wire high impedance speaker.

Circa: mid 1920's
Type: PM, two wire high impedance
Cone: 14.5" paper
Labels: none
Decal: N/A
Cabinet/Case: metal, formed steel w/cast base
Color: dark bronze
Driver: original vintage type, fitted as described n the above text
Grille cloth: n/a
Flaws, cracks, blems: nothing significant
Measurements (approx): 14.5" diameter cone
