Pictured above are the Martian Big Four (left) and Special (right). These are both fine examples of the novelty side of mid 1920's radio receivers. The Big Four is made of brass and aluminum with a pot metal tripod. Unfortunately this scarce crystal set is often found with the tripod in a common condition of what I call pot metal cancer.
The differences in the Special are the base construction (which is cast iron) and the number of headphone connections. The Big Four can accommodate up to four headsets. Since the connections are all in parallel, a loss of volume will accompany each additional headphone connected to this most basic of crystal sets.
