Circa 1936, restoration just completed on this piece and it is now a proud part of my collection. This rare and unusual radio remains a mystery as to who made it. The book "Machine Age to Jet Age II" (by Mark Stein) has it listed as "General Television" model 5A5A. I have concluded that his info is incorrect as when you look up the technical data for that model, there is no 5A5A listed. However there is a model 5A5 listed but neither it or any other General Television model shows a chassis that is in anyway similar to the above. I have physically looked at the schematics and component layout of every General Television radio listed from the mid 1930's - late '40's and there is none even similar to the chassis used in the above radio.
My conclusion is that the electronics was made by Hetro and G&F sales contracted the cabinets to be made elsewhere. They were most likely sold through furniture stores or maybe there was a G&F company that sold a variety of products under that trade name.
I have found the correct schematic for the above set. It is: Hetro Electrical Industries models 10310 - 10610 Series "B". It can be found in Riders; - 9/11.
The tube line up:
6A7 (osc & converter)
6D6 (IF)
75 (detector & AF amp)
25L6 (audio out)
6G5 (tuning eye)
25Z5 (rectifier)
L49C (ballast)
I have seen two of these + pictures of a third and all had the same chassis and tube compliment. No other info on the cabinet or chassis except the paper "G&F Radio" sticker on the cabinet back. It only gives antenna hook-up instructions.
The metal chassis ID tag shows the typical RCA license info and does not indicate the manufacturer.

< Repro dial scale available, it's not formed (as was the original which is slightly "bubbled" to fit into dial area cut-out). Mine will be flat but can will work just fine. |
